BREXIT – Good news for owners of registered EU trademarks and designs
As mentioned earlier here, there has been uncertainty on how the Britain was going to deal with Brexit in relation to EU trademark and design rights. Now, there is good news! Robin Walker, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, stated on July 19, 2018:
“Meanwhile, we have agreed to protect all existing EU trademarks, community-registered designs and unregistered designs in the UK as we leave the EU. In place of those EU-level rights, 1.5 million new UK trademarks and registered designs will be granted automatically and for free.”
No decision has yet been made with regard to for instance pending applications and oppositions will be handled, but in any case the above is a positive sign for EU rights holders.
